Newborn Portrait: Into Loving Arms

  • by

I had the chance to photograph this new baby boy a few weeks ago. His grandma and grandpa were there to greet him.  So many awaiting this little one with open arms.  Welcome little guy!

I wanted to present the photographs in slideshow form, since I have never done that before. As many of you know, I love music. Music and imagery are two of my very favorite things. I could probably spend hours choosing music to pair with a video. Thanks to Mr. Google, my search was cut short when I came across this simple, but beautiful, piano piece.

Tell me what you think. Too sentimental? Perfect? What’s the word on the video? Does it take forever to load?

Gallery Shows

  • by

Hello to all the blog world, which I feel is no longer reading blogs. Is this true? Personally, I no longer read blogs. If you do not follow me on Facebook, then you will not know all the crazy things that I have been doing. Even if you do follow me you might not be aware of how busy I’ve been.

I’ve been getting pieces ready for 4 shows along with a million transfers for this Saturday’s Handcrafted in Colorado pop up trunk show. Ok, maybe not a million. I wanted to have 20, but it looks like that number is dwindling. Maybe 10-15 transfers to sell.

Anyway, what has been consuming me and my time has really been my gallery appearances. This month is the Month of Photography in Denver and I have 4 pieces in 3 different shows.

“I’d Rather Be”
These photographs were created while listening to Dead Kennedys’ “Holiday in Cambodia” and because of that I felt it might fit into the Rock & Roll show at my friend’s Bay St Luis, Mississippi gallery Smith and Lens. If you are ever in or near Bay St. Luis, please stop in and say hi to Ann. You will not be sorry you did. She is one of the best people out there and highly entertaining.

This piece is currently hanging at the Hinterland Art Space in Denver’s RINO Art District and is entitled Too Much. The show runs through April 3rd. It can also be seen with many other self portraits by different photographers over at My Reflective Lens, a monthly self portrait project that I am part of this year.

Faceless in a Crowd
These two photographs will be hanging at the Aurora Cultural Arts District at 1400 Dallas St. The opening reception is Saturday night from 6-8pm (I can only stay until 7) after which people will be invited to the Fox theater for a stage production of Harm’s Way ($22). These two events mark the start of an entire women in arts festival. The show will be hanging until April 4th.

This piece will be hanging at Spark Gallery at 900 Santa Fe in Devner until April 12th. The opening reception will be Friday night also 6-9. I will be there around 7:45-9pm.

I plan to leave my house on Friday night at 5:30. Anyone who wants to join me in both places can hop on the party van and we’ll crank the music and drive through traffic together.

I had no idea…

Hey blog.  It’s been a tough couple of weeks.  I’m not really sure how to process it all, so I’ll share a little here. A bit of writing therapy. Here goes:

My dad passed away and I’ve been left to wrap my mind around a few major issues.  He decided it best that I didn’t know he had cancer for the past 8 years and bed ridden and dying since Thanksgiving.  I’m not sure why anyone would keep their death from their own daughter, but that was what he chose.  It is strange and bizarre and I feel a bit cheated.  We weren’t close.  He was a hard man; difficult to love, difficult to understand his motivations… prickly.   I believe he wrote me off because of political differences which is ridiculous to me.  So I feel like I don’t really know why the past 6 or 7 years he had been pulling away, if only to save me from grief.  Which I also don’t understand.

I visited with my siblings after his death.  There was no service so we made our own.  Below is pictured our time together recounting the good times we had with our dad.  We also wrote questions to him, since he left us with so many, and burnt them in the fire.  Having returned to California and Huntington Beach specifically brought back so many childhood memories.  So much has changed but I found some old HB between the newly built skin.  Those images I have been posting on my instagram feed as a sort of homage to my dad.

Hello blog. Hello new year.

I have taken quite a bit of time away from my blog. I’ve ignored you, poor baby. I’ve been too busy with the Holiday rush and life to make any updates. Often I wonder if anyone even reads blogs anymore. Do you? Let me know… otherwise I’ll just assume I’m talking to air, which is cool too.

This month I’m offering a Photo 101 Course. I figure this time of year is a great time to learn something new, become better at a skill. It’s when we all resolve to be better.  See, I’m resolving to not ignore my blog.

If you’d like to become a better picture taker, I’ve got you covered.  We’ll spend a good part of a Saturday together and you will finally sort out what the heck an f-stop is and how to see light and photograph your kids without pulling out your hair.  It’ll be great.  I’m only allowing 8 participants to keep things small and intimate and personal.  You can even tell me what you struggle with or what you love to photograph when you register.  That way, this class will be catered to you.  Besides, hangin with me for a few hours on a Saturday is exactly what you want to do, right?
