Fine Art Photography- “Caged”

  • by

Fine art photographic image transfer to wood with gold leaf and arcylic paint.
Months ago I took a drive to the local Costco. While driving, the radio began playing the song “My Body is a Cage” by Arcade Fire. The words brought to mind my friend who was in hospice care, her end near, her family gathered. In the spring, she was gifted enough health to attend, and even dance at her youngest daughter’s wedding. But as I listened to the song I realized that she was trapped, unable to dance with the ones she loved. Her body was a cage, had become her enemy.

Learning from a Master

Color photograph of the side of a building, twin windows and twin poles, Fort Collins, Colorado
Every once in awhile we are given the chance to learn from someone who knows what’s up. A few weeks ago I got to hang with a photographer named David Carol. He specializes in photographing what ever he wants… which is mostly street photography.

He had juried a show up at the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins and was offering a quick workshop to share how he sees. I jumped on it, feeling good that I would finally get up there to the Center and actually meet David after following his FB feed for about a year. I’m not a street photographer, but I am fascinated by the thought process of any artist. And I knew it’d be entertaining, at the very least. Besides, I had been scolded by many photo friends when they found out I hadn’t ever been up to the c4fap.

Since Zach’s oboe professor was performing in Loveland after the workshop, we loaded the kids into the van and headed up. I had a great time listening to David talk about his work ethic (get out and shoot!) and how opportunities opened to allow him to publish and sell his work. Hard work, dedication and single mindedness. We talked, photographed together and the group all went to lunch and chatted even more. He razzed me for not photographing my family while they sat beside us eating their lunch. Ya, ya. Still working on that work ethic piece. and I need to see more, is really what he was getting at. I could use a David on my shoulder, egging me on.

So I’ve been here in the Denver area for 8 years and pretty much live in my own little bubble. I have a great network of friends who live around the world but only a handful in my area. You know who you are- xo. Really, I am a suburban soccer mom. GAH!

So it was exciting to meet real live photographers who aren’t in my mom world. Christopher Perez runs a place called Processus that has a wet darkroom, printmaking equipment… he mentioned something about framing your own work and doing stuff in a wood shop. I plan to get over there soon.

Another photographer I met is Preston Utley. He’s a wedding photographer who’s personal work resonates with me. Check it out: the snap shot diaries… a photographic travel log that is beautiful in it’s simplicity.

Around Town- Gallery Opening

  • by

Friday I had the chance to visit Walker Fine Art Gallery for the opening of their latest exhibition entitled “FIGURATIVELY SPEAKING“. While there I saw a few pieces by Sally Stockhold, whom I’ve seen several times before and love! A new favorite is Tim Main. His photo realistic pencil drawings of Polaroids were powerful in subject matter and visually stunning.

So now you need to head to the gallery and take a look for yourself… and if you aren’t local, do a little web surfing.

Each month I try to produce at least one self portrait. Along the way, I am sharing these images with a group of very talented photographers around the country and world who also create self portraits. Some for the first time. We have a facebook group and are also sharing on our website called My Reflective Lens.
I sometimes feel like self portraiture just seems natural, since I am home by myself with my thoughts and can create without the help of anyone. Other times I feel like self portraits are narcissistic and stupid. I have to push past the latter thought, since I really feel like this work has helped me create more purposefully. It may seem weird to photograph oneself… but I really do, in my heart, think it is a natural way to create and communicate through art.
Photograph yourself beyond the selfie, get past the duck face. If only so your family and friends can see you; the creator of so much beauty with a lens. Get in the shot.

Gallery Shows

Hello to all the blog world, which I feel is no longer reading blogs. Is this true? Personally, I no longer read blogs. If you do not follow me on Facebook, then you will not know all the crazy things that I have been doing. Even if you do follow me you might not be aware of how busy I’ve been.

I’ve been getting pieces ready for 4 shows along with a million transfers for this Saturday’s Handcrafted in Colorado pop up trunk show. Ok, maybe not a million. I wanted to have 20, but it looks like that number is dwindling. Maybe 10-15 transfers to sell.

Anyway, what has been consuming me and my time has really been my gallery appearances. This month is the Month of Photography in Denver and I have 4 pieces in 3 different shows.

“I’d Rather Be”
These photographs were created while listening to Dead Kennedys’ “Holiday in Cambodia” and because of that I felt it might fit into the Rock & Roll show at my friend’s Bay St Luis, Mississippi gallery Smith and Lens. If you are ever in or near Bay St. Luis, please stop in and say hi to Ann. You will not be sorry you did. She is one of the best people out there and highly entertaining.

This piece is currently hanging at the Hinterland Art Space in Denver’s RINO Art District and is entitled Too Much. The show runs through April 3rd. It can also be seen with many other self portraits by different photographers over at My Reflective Lens, a monthly self portrait project that I am part of this year.

Faceless in a Crowd
These two photographs will be hanging at the Aurora Cultural Arts District at 1400 Dallas St. The opening reception is Saturday night from 6-8pm (I can only stay until 7) after which people will be invited to the Fox theater for a stage production of Harm’s Way ($22). These two events mark the start of an entire women in arts festival. The show will be hanging until April 4th.

This piece will be hanging at Spark Gallery at 900 Santa Fe in Devner until April 12th. The opening reception will be Friday night also 6-9. I will be there around 7:45-9pm.

I plan to leave my house on Friday night at 5:30. Anyone who wants to join me in both places can hop on the party van and we’ll crank the music and drive through traffic together.
